Frequently Asked
Questions
Due to various changes occurring in WINDOWS
architecture we had to make significant changes in our software. In this
regard please switch off the TOGGLE KEY (NUM LOCK, CAPS LOCK or SCROLL LOCK) on
the keyboard before closing any application like Leap Office 2000, ISM 2000,
Microsoft WORD etc. This will ensure the proper operation of our software
across all the WINDOWS Operating Systems.
Q. What is the recommended system configuration to run ISM with Windows based applications?
Ans.: For
running MS-Windows based applications such as PageMaker, CorelDraw and Ventura
Gold, a minimum configuration of a 486DX based PC with 8 MB RAM, VGA/Hercules
display, 80 MB Hard disk and a mouse is recommended.
Note: ISM while
running takes only 4MB of RAM for software and around 100 KB per fonts
depending on the number of fonts loaded. ISM takes around 63 MB of disk space
for software and 50 KB for every ISFOC font.
Q. What is ATM and why is it required for running ISM under Windows?
Ans.: ISM comes with 2 types of
fonts –
a. True Type
Fonts. Windows supports True Type fonts by default.
b. Type-1 Fonts.
ISM also supports PostScript Type-1 fonts.
These are
outline fonts, which can be scaled to any size for any aspect ratio and
resolution. These are not supported by Windows OS by default, for this an
additional manager is required. ATM (Adobe Type Manager) is basically a font
manager, which generates bitmap fonts, on the fly, for Windows for different
bitmap devices such as screen, dot matrix and HP LaserJet compatible printers.
ISM Installer will not install Type 1 fonts unless ATM is installed for
windows.
Note: Please note that if you
are interested in only TrueType fonts, then ATM is not required.
Q. What is the
difference between Monolingual Font/Bilingual Font/ Web Font?
Ans.:
Monolingual Font: These fonts begin with the initial DV-TTFontName(For
Devanagari as script). Once we switch
on the Script Key (e.g. Caps Lock) with proper settings in ISM Menu Indian
Language will be typed in applications of Windows. These fonts are recommended
for Desktop Publishing Application because all the possible display variation
is available (here is the advantage). In Monolingual fonts if some English
Characters are to be typed then the user has to select the font name starting
with DV1-TTFontName, switch OFF the Script Key and start typing.
Bilingual Font:
These fonts begin with the initial DVB-TTFontName(For Devanagari as script). Once
we switch on the Script Key (e.g. Caps Lock) with proper settings in ISM Menu
Indian Language will be typed in applications of Windows. These fonts are
normally used for Word-processing type of Applications. If some English
Characters are desired then just switch OFF the Script Key and start typing
(here is the advantage).
Note: To work
in Monolingual Font, the 'Bilingual Enable' option in ISM 'Settings' menu has
to be ticked off. To work in 'Bilingual Font' option the 'Bilingual
Enable' option in ISM 'Settings' menu has to be ticked on.
Web Font: These
fonts begin with the initial DVW-TTFontName. These are the latest range of
fonts available in ISM. These will be used to generate contents in Indian
Language on the WEB. These will be monolingual in nature.
Q. If I install ISM for Windows, will all my applications running under Windows support ISM?
Ans.: Yes and
No. There are many reasons for this. One, if an application does not allow the
usage of different fonts such as Windows Notepad then you cannot use ISM and
ISFOC fonts in it. Also if an application uses separate fonts other than the
fonts supplied by Windows, such as CorelDraw 2.0 then special fonts are
required for the same.
Second, if an
application requires some settings in its configuration files, such as Ventura
Gold (taken care of in ISM), it has to be done during Installation. Otherwise
it may not work properly.
Third, if an
application does not allow usage of 8-bit codes (256 characters), such as
WordStar for Windows ISM cannot support it.
Fourth, if an
application maps or rearranges the codes, then ISM has to be modified for that,
e.g. Ventura Gold which is supported right now.
Fifth, if an
application expects the key strokes in a different way than the normal way of
doing it, such as MS PowerPoint then the ISM software has to be modified to
take care of it.
Finally, all
"True" Windows applications are "ISM Friendly", unless they
do certain things themselves by not following the Windows standards.
To tackle the
above listed problems upto some extent you can use Tune Application feature
(which is incorporated from ISM 2.5 version onwards). If you found that with
some application or new version of the application you are not able to use ISM
fonts, you are facing some problems like repeated characters are getting
displayed then Tune Application feature (now Application Category option in the
ISM Menu). In older versions of ISM the tune Application Feature will give you
a dialogue box and you will find one button labeled ‘Default Application Category’.
There are 13 different categories. After loading ISM Default category is ‘0’
which is capable of handling commonly used applications. Now for your
‘problematic’ application, you have to check one by one for these categories
and find the appropriate one where will be able to use ISM fonts. This you have
to do by trail and error for all the categories to find out the appropriate one.
Q. How do I set default fonts for
applications using ISM?
Ans.: In ISM
2.5 onwards MS-Macros are supported for setting up default fonts in the
application like MS-Word for toggling between English and Indian languages.
What it means is when you will put toggle key ON your default font for the
selected Indian language will be selected automatically and when you will put toggle
key OFF default English font will be selected. These default font settings have
to be done on ISM control panel/settings/set default font option. This feature
can be used in MS-Word, MS-Publisher, MS-Write etc.
For using this
feature in MS-Word you need to do some settings as-
First Install
MS-Word and then install ISM. Activate ISM and then open Word. In MS-Word you
may face a problem like WordPerfect help will be displayed on the screen when
you will enable Toggle Key. To get rid of these problems go to Help/WordPerfect
Help/options and deselect ‘Help for WordPerfect users’.
Ans.: This
happens with when the Dongle is not recognized / or not working. Please check
the parallel port of the machine before installing. Also change the Parallel
Port settings from the system setup - Integrated Peripherals - Onboard Parallel
Port - EPP, ECP, EPP/ECP, Normal / Standard / Bi-directional (The parallel port
settings in the System Setup varies from different machine to machine depending
upon the Bios).
This problem is
also operating system specific. If you are having Windows XP and you are using
ISM 2000 version 4.04.00 released before March 31st 2002, then you will have to
run a new hinistall.zip, which can be obtained, from support.gist@cdacindia.com.
Q. How do I invoke ISM for Windows?
Ans.: ISM Program
will be available in the Start, Program, ISM Office (or Publisher or Soft) and
click on ISM 2000.Exe (the Exe name differs for different versions)
Q. How ISM can be
invoked automatically when the computer restarts?
Ans.: After
installing ISM go to Start, Settings, Taskbar. Click on 'Start Menu Program'
and then 'Add'. In the command line 'Browse for the directory (e.g. C:\Program
Files\ISM2000) where ISM is loaded and double click on ISM2000.exe file. Click
on 'Next'. Afterwards click on the 'Startup' folder and click next, till it
shows 'Finish'. To check out just restart the computer and see if ISM gets
loaded automatically.
Q. Text is not properly aligning in any of the Windows based applications including Write. What has gone wrong?
Ans.: This may
be probably because of the fonts Cache set for ATM is less than 128 KB. By
default it is 96 KB. It has to be increased to a minimum of 128 KB in the ATM
control panel.
Q. Why is it not
possible to modify an already entered word in the same way it was keyed-in?
Ans.: This was
a problem in ISM version 3.0. It is now solved in the latest versions of ISM.
Q. Can I sort on a column or field in a spreadsheet or database package under Windows?
Ans.: In ISM
latest version (i.e. ISM 2000 onwards) an Excel Macro is available, which
provides Indian language sorting.
Q. Can I send the printer output to a file and then later on print it on a Dot Matrix, Laser Printer or an Image Setter?
Ans.: For this
you have to redirect the printer output to a file. This can be done by
installing a new printer driver connected to "File". In the Windows
Control Panel click on the Printers icon. The Windows printer driver
installation dialog box will appear. In that select the printer you want, press
"Install", and then "Connect" the destination to
"File". Select this Printer driver in your document and give the
print command. Windows printer driver will now ask you for a file name. Give
some file name, say MYFILE.PRN. Go to DOS, and from the DOS prompt, type COPY
MYFILE.PRN LPT1 /B, to send the print file to the printer. Here the filename or
the port, say LPT1 or LPT2 can be different depending on your setup. /B stands
for Binary. In case of printers connected to COM1 or COM2 (e.g. Apple LaserWriter's)
necessary setting has to be made using the DOS MODE utility, for which refer to
your printer manual.
Q. ISFOC fonts appear on screen and print on a Non-PostScript printer but not printing on a PostScript printer. What to do?
Ans.: Probably
you would have installed the PostScript driver after installing ATM or ISM. In
this case some entries in the WIN.INI, normally created by ATM or ISM Installer
may not be there. For this just copy the \PSFONTS\PFM\*.PFM into the \PSFONTS
directory and from the ATM control Panel (Main Window) 'Add' all the fonts in
the \PSFONTS directory. This will update the required files and will work fine.
Q. I have a HP
LaserJet printer with a Pacific Page cartridge? What printer driver should I
select?
Ans.: If you
are using a Pacific Page PostScript cartridge version 3.0 or above with a HP
LaserJet printer, select Apple LaserWriter II NT printer driver which works
more accurately than any other PostScript driver such as HP LaserJet
PostScript. Pacific Page cartridges version 2.0 or below may have some problems
with ATM fonts, in that case upgrade your cartridge or use the HP LaserJet
driver and forget PostScript.
Q. Characters are not aligning properly in PageMaker, when text is justified. What to do?
Ans.: While
justifying a paragraph, by default, PageMaker tries to put micro-spaces between
characters. This does not matter for an English text, but in Indian scripts,
where characters overlap on each other, this will create misalignment of
characters inside words. By specifying proper values for the paragraph
specification, this can be avoided. In the paragraph option of the Type menu,
click the spacing button. The "Spacing attributes" dialog box will
appear. In that, for the Letter space, specify zero for all the Minimum, Desired
and Maximum parameters.
Q. When a write file created by A2IWIN is placed in PageMaker, character in location 96 is not coming. (See the ISFOC code chart for a specific script, e.g. "tha" in Devanagari.) How do I get it converted properly?
Ans.: You will
have to switch 'Off' the "Convert Quotes" option in the PageMaker's
Place dialog box.
Q. When point size below 18 or 24 is selected in Ventura Gold 4.x for Windows undesired spaces appear between characters. This problem is not there in any of the other Windows based application such as PageMaker or Write. Is there any solution for this?
Ans.: This is
because of Ventura's mishandling of zero-width characters (e.g. Devanagari top
and bottom mantras). It justifies text based on it's own width table, it does
not take the width information provided by Windows (ATM). But, by setting
Automatic Pair Kerning=On, Letter Spacing=Off, Tracking=Looser (0.01 ems) in
the Paragraph Typography, they appear properly. Different values from 0.05 ems
to 0.005 ems for Tracking can be tried out for better results.
Q. Few characters at the end of a line are not shown in CorelDraw 3.0. What to do?
Ans.: This is
because CorelDraw is not handling the non-displayable (Kern- Space) characters
properly. A solution for this is provided for some script fonts by putting a
small dot in the Kern-spaces so that they will overlap on the previous
character. For example, in Devanagari fonts a small dot in kern-spaces has been
put so that they overlap exactly on the Shirorekha of the previous character.
But this is not always possible for all the Scripts (e.g. Bengali, Telugu,
Kannada). Also this will have side effects like showing a small circle when the
text is outlined. Solution for this is to give a negligible outline value of
0.1 in the pen tool. This works fine and no drop out of characters occur.
Scripts, which do not have kern-spaces such as Tamil and Malayalam, do not have
any problems.
Q. When I fit a Devanagari text on a circle using the "Fit Text to Path" command in CorelDraw, all the top bars in Devanagari (shirorekas) are splitting. Is there any way to get it properly connected?
Ans.: The
CorelDraw "Fit Text to Path" command is basically made with English
in mind. While fitting the text over a circle, it tries to put spaces between the
characters, which is causing the top bars in Devanagari to split. So this
command cannot be used as such. There are two ways of getting it done. One,
"Convert the Text to Curves" and modify it as you wish. Other, you can
edit the "Envelop" and drag the boundaries so as to make the text
bend over a circle.
Q. ISFOC script fonts do
not align properly and characters overlap at undesired places on a Hercules
display, where as the same CorelDraw and the same ISM works fine on a VGA
display. Is there anything wrong?
Ans.: In the
CorelDraw manuals it is clearly mentioned that the CorelDraw may not run
properly on a Hercules Display. Please note that the same ATM fonts are used in
all the other applications such as PageMaker, Write, etc. It is not a problem
of ISM or ISFOC fonts. The only way out is to switch over to a VGA display.
Q. When I import a Write document into MS-Word the character in location 196 (e.g.. chandrabindu in ISFOC-DV) is not appearing, instead a hyphen is coming. Why so?
Ans.: There is
no solution for this. The Write filter that comes with MS-Word is
mal-functioning. This can even be verified by opening a new file in Write,
select an English font, say Times, enter character 196 by typing ALT-0196 and
importing the write file in MS-Word. Char 196 will not come.
Q. Character in location 123 (e.g. "pra" in ISFOC-DV) is not appearing in Word Perfect. What to do?
Ans.: Word
Perfect does not show this character, for which the reason is not known. Right
now there is no solution for this.
Q. I want to type English capital letters with CAPS-LOCK on while ISM is active. What do I do?
Ans.: You can
temporarily deactivate ISM by pressing <CTRL>+<SPACE>. Then with
CAPS-LOCK 'On' you can get English capital letter. This works in a toggle
manner. This is possible from the ISM menu also. When ISM is disabled you will
get [Disabled] below the ISM icon.
Q. How do I download the
ISFOC fonts and make them resident for Windows?
Ans.: The ISFOC
fonts for Windows come in the ATM PostScript Type-1 format. They can be
downloaded only to a PostScript printer or an image setter. Use the PSDNLOAD
utility, which is there in your ISM directory. Example : PSDNLOAD -v
RMTM0NPS.PFB. You can find the ISFOC PFB files in your \PSFONTS directory
(Check WINDOWS\ATM.INI). After downloading the fonts, the WINDOWS\WIN.INI file
has to be modified to mark that you have downloaded certain fonts and are
resident in the printer. Open WIN.INI in any ASCII editor and in the
[PostScript,XXXX] section, where XXXX stands for the output destination, e.g.
[PostScript,LPT1], if your PostScript printer is connected to LPT1, remove the
PFB entry. For example, modify
softfont144=M:\PSFONTS\PFM\RMTM0NPS.PFM,M:\PSFONTS\RMTM0NPS.PFB to
softfont144=M:\PSFONTS\PFM\RMTM0NPS.PFM This will work till your printer is on.
So after switching off and on the printer, before printing any document,
containing the font marked as resident in the WIN.INI, you have to download the
fonts using the PSDNLOAD utility.
Q. Is it possible to download the ISFOC fonts into a hard disk of an Imagesetter and make them resident?
Ans.: To
download a font to the hard disk of an imagesetter use the "PSDNLOAD"
utility with the '-h' option. Also you have to modify the WIN.INI file to mark them
as resident. See the previous question for the details.
Q. When I convert an ISCII (PC-ACII) file created using GIST card with A2IWIN and opened it in Write, I get only junk. What went wrong in my conversion?
Ans.: GIST Card
uses two different codes, ACII (also called as 8-bit ISCII), and the PC-ISCII.
Text, which is entered in the DATA PAGE (8-bit), or in the PC-ISCII mode of the
SP or the GIST Card ALP, needs the PC-ISCII button to be ON (by default ISCII
is selected) for A2IWIN. You can also use the GIST Code CONVERT utility, which
is there in your ISM directory for converting between different codes. Other
than GIST and ALP, there are some other packages available in the market, which
uses the ISCII code. But may be the old version, ISCII-86. You can use the
CNVISCII utility available in the ISM directory to convert them to the
ISCII-88, which is the ALP and the ACI2ISF standard. You can check out the code
of a particular file by running the TELLCODE utility followed by the file name,
which you want to convert.
Q. How to get the Script numerals instead of International numerals in the files converted by A2IWIN?
Ans.: By switching
"Off" (Un-Checked) the "English Numerals" check box in the
A2IWIN dialogue box.
Q. Can a specific font be selected for different scripts while converting an ACII file using A2IWIN?
Ans.: To select
the font of your choice during conversion select the Default Script and click
on the "Choose Font" button. You will see a dialogue box showing all
the various typefaces installed in your system. Select the font and the point
size of your choice from that dialogue box. Then your document will be
converted with that font you have specified.
Q. Can I transliterate
an ALP Devanagari file to Roman while importing it into PageMaker?
Ans.: Transliteration
can be done by the A2IWIN file conversion utility by specifying an alternative
script, in this case Roman, as the Default Script.
Q. Can HPMIRROR utility
be used with a printer other than a HP LaserJet series II printer?
Ans.: HPMIRROR
can work only on print files generated with a HP LaserJet Series II (PCL 4)
driver. Any HP LaserJet series II compatible printer including the later models
such as Series III, Series 4 can also take the output of the HPMIRROR and give
a mirrored print out.
Q. Can I get a mirrored
print on 600 dpi HP LaserJet Series 4 printer using the HPMIRROR utility.
Ans.: As the
print file is made for HP Series II printer driver (PCL 4) which supports only
300 dpi, even though you have a HP LaserJet Series 4 printer you will be able
to print only in 300 dpi.
Q. How can I get a mirrored printout on a PostScript printer?
Ans.: A
separate utility is not required for this, since the PostScript driver for
Windows itself provides this feature (Look into the PostScript driver Setup dialog
box).
Q. How to disable the Inscript Keyboard overlay without removing it?
Ans.: By
pressing <CTRL>+<SPACE> you can disable the Inscript Keyboard
overlay in Windows. This will toggle the Keyboard overlay between the Inscript
and the normal QWERTY mode.
Q. What are Matching English Fonts?
Ans.: These are
English fonts made to match a specific typeface of a script by look, style,
weight and size. This removes a lot of irritation in selecting a matching
English font for a script face, which saves time and gives a better look to
multilingual documents. For e.g. 12 point Normal DV1-Yogesh (English) font will
optically match 12 point Normal DV-Yogesh (Devanagari) font.
Q. What about Sanskrit in ISFOC Devanagari?
Ans.: Sanskrit
requires more exotic conjuncts in Devanagari which most of the Hindi /Marathi
text doesn't require. The ISFOC Devanagari font character set has been
specially designed to do proper justice to the modern requirements of
Devanagari. So the additional characters required to represent Sanskrit can be
fulfilled by providing an additional character set. This can also contain the
Vedic ascents. The ISM Windows Keyboard manager needs to be modified to switch
between the two fonts dynamically. With ISM 2.5 Devanagari version, Sanskrit
has been provided. One font SD-Surekh (Normal and Bold) with around 50
traditional conjuncts is included.
Q. When Sanskrit is selected as a Script and font is selected for typing it gives an error" Illegal Operation".
Ans.: This was
an intermittent problem and to get an updated file (dll) contact support.gist@cdacindia.com
Q. How do I get
different display renditions for certain combinations?
Ans.: ISM
follows some recommended defaults as specified in the ISFOC standards manual.
Alternative forms for some of the conjuncts and other combinations are also
provided. Alternative conjunct forms can be obtained by typing two or more
halants between the consonants. Information regarding alternative forms in each
script, if any, are provided in their respective Inscript Keyboard manuals.
Q. Is it possible to import an ALP document or a Windows ISM document into any of the MAC applications?
Ans.: Use ISM's
ACII to ISFOC (A2I) convert utility, select the RTF (MAC) format and generate
an ISFOC output file. The output MAC RTF file .MTF) is a pure 7-bit ASCII text
file and can be taken to MAC using the Apple File Exchange utility or MacLink
or can be read directly using an Apple SuperDrive. Then it can be imported into
any of the MAC applications, which support an RTF import filter. From a Windows
application you can export the text as RTF and take it to MAC and import it
into any of the application you want. Note that the ISFOC fonts you have
installed for Windows should also be present in MAC or else you will see only
junk.
Q. How to upgrade a
lower level package to a higher level one, such as from ISM-SS to ISM-MS and
ISM Single User to a ISM Netware version.
Ans.: ISM is available
in two levels. A different version is available for Novell Netware also. The
ISM Single Script is for any one Script and the Multiscript is for any two
scripts. Diacritic Roman fonts are provided with both the packages. A higher
level upgrade can be obtained by paying the difference in cost and returning
the old Lock. A new set of floppies, additional manuals and a new Lock will be
provided as upgrade.
Q. How do I use ISM with
Lotus AmiPro and WordPro?
Ans.: Lotus
AmiPro is the Word Processor bundled with Lotus SmartSuite for Windows 3.1 and
WordPro is the Word Processor bundled with Lotus SmartSuite for Windows95/98.
In both these Word processors ISM can be used but before that you need to
disable the Smart Correct/AutoCorrect options found in the File menu of both
the word processors. Go to file menu then to User Setup, WordPro preferences.
Click on the 'Enable' tab and deselect the 'Smart correct' option.
Q. I’m facing problems
with MS Excel.
Ans.: While using
ISM in MS-Excel you may face the problem with the words starting with ‘a’ and
‘aa’ that is the keystrokes Shift + d and shift + e respectively. This is
because these key values are used for generating formulas by MS-Excel. To get
rid of this problems give one space (or comma or semicolon etc) at the
beginning of the word starting with ‘a’ and ‘aa’ which will prevent to define
it as a formula and you can do your data entry in MS-Excel in selected Indian
Language. You have to give the language font as the default font for the
spreadsheet you are working with. This default font is to be specified in
MS-Excel’s Tools/Option/General and specify whichever default font you want to
select. The changes will take effect only after closing Excel and starting it again.
Q. Border is not getting
printed above 650 sizes from any application.
Ans.: This
problem you are facing is because of less printer memory. Generally symbol or
border fonts will be very high graphics fonts and hence for printing them in a
bigger point sizes you will need more memory on your printer. To solve this
problem follow following steps
Open CorelDraw
and type the required border there.
2) Then using
Arrow tool in CorelDraw select the typed border (after selecting using arrow
key you will see 8 dots around the typed border). Go to Arrange menu of the
Corel and click on ‘Convert To Curves’ sub option. What this means is you have
converted this border character to a bitmap.
3) Copy this
curved converted file from CorelDraw using Edit/Copy option
4) Open the
PageMaker file where you want to use this Border, select arrow tool from
PageMaker’s toolbox (don’t select cursor i.e. ‘A’ tool) and say Paste from
Edit/Paste menu.
5) Your curved
converted border will be pasted on the PageMaker document. Now this Border in
PM can be made of any size by holding shift key down and dragging the border by
Mouse, which you can print, on any printer.
This exercise
we have to do because of limited hardware (i.e. printer physical memory) we
have.
Q. When I fit a Devanagari text on a circle using the "Fit Text to Path" command in CorelDraw, all the top bars in Devanagari (shirorekas) are splitting. Is there any way to get it properly connected?
Ans.: The
CorelDraw "Fit Text to Path" command is basically made with English
in mind. While fitting the text over a circle, it tries to put spaces between
the characters, which is causing the top bars in Devanagari to split. So this
command cannot be used as such. There are two ways of getting it done. One,
"Convert the Text to Curves" and modify it as you wish. Other, you
can edit the "Envelop" and drag the boundaries so as to make the text
bend over a circle.
Q. While using ISM
in some spreadsheet like MS-Excel the top row of column number or row number is
appearing as junk characters OR
Ans.: This
problem was there with ISM version 2.5 and below. But with the existing version
of ISM 3.04a this problem will be solved by using the 'Bilingual Font' option.
Q. Hardware lock is not
working on the machines parallel port.
Ans.: ISM is
copy protected by a Hardware Lock, which is to be connected to the computers
parallel port. Never connect this hardware lock to the serial port, which may
spoil it. Without this lock it is not possible to install and use ISM. Now
after connecting the lock to the parallel port and clicking on ISM if still
some message like ‘Hardware lock not found’ is displayed then check following
settings -
1) Check your
systems parallel port. You can check this by printing through it.
2) Check that
the lock is connected properly or not.
3) If you are using
486DX2 or Pentium then in the BIOS setup you will find sub option as LPT or
Parallel port settings. Here parallel port standards like EPP, ECP, Standard,
EPP/ECP etc will be listed. Out of this try to use the lock with Standard or
ECP/EPP mode.
4) If still
lock does not work contact your GIST Distributor with all your system details
and GIST software details.
Note: This
check has to be carried out after installation of ISM is successful.
Q. Is Spell checking for
Indian languages is possible using ISM?
Ans.: Yes, ISM
2.5 onwards spell checkers for Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati are supported. When
you will load ISM one Icon labeled ‘spell caster’ will be created into the ISM
group. This spell caster can spell check the data entered into any windows
based application like PageMaker, MS-Word etc using ISM fonts. Presently spell
caster is available for Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati languages. For details on
how to use spell caster please refer to the spell caster help.
Also with ISM
3.04a Word Macro has been added which will spell-check in Devanagari (at
present) in MS-Word directly. Please check up with support.gist@cdacindia.com
for further language software.
Q. Is Sanskrit is supported with ISM?
Ans.: Yes ISM 2.5
onwards, Sanskrit is supported with ISM Devanagari. On the ISM control panel’s
script list you will find one more script labeled ‘Sanskrit’. Again one
Sanskrit font named ‘SD-Surekh’ will be there. So while using Sanskrit select
script as ‘Sanskrit’ and select font as ‘SD-Surekh’ in your application’s font
list.
Q. Is it possible to use some other key as toggle key than caps lock?
Ans.: ISM 2.5
onwards you can change the toggle key. You can use Caps lock, Num lock or
Scroll lock key. This can be done from ISM control panel Settings option.
Ans.: With ISM
Office and ISM Publisher, Apex Language Processor (ALP)(Word Processor on DOS)
is bundled free. ALP is more than a simple editor, which supports all Indian
languages and has majority of the features of WordStar 4.0. This ALP will work
on the same Hardware lock of ISM. You can select the language of your choice
and do Word Processing kind of jobs on DOS. Now if you wish to take ALP file
into windows then you can do that by using ACII to ISFOC converter (A2I WIN)
utility of ISM. In ISM group you can find this utility icon labeled ‘A2I WIN’
where you can give input as ALP file, you can specify its script and font and
the output file format like RTF, MS-Write, Corel, Ventura etc. A2I will convert
the ALP file to the specified format (say RTF) and which then can be imported
into the required application (like MS-Word or PageMaker) for making further
layout.
Q. While installing ISM the message ‘ctl3dv.dll is not found’ is displayed and is coming out of the installer?
Ans.:
CTL3DV.DLL is file for giving 3D button effect in windows which is required for
ISM .So if you are facing any problem like this, copy this file (ctl3dv.dll)
into windows system directory and install ISM.
Q. How do I use ISM to
create WebPages?
Ans.: The
TrueType fonts provided with ISM are ideally suited for making WEB pages (HTML
files) on the Internet. To create HTML files you can use an HTML editor such as
Netscape Composer or Microsoft FrontPage and enter the Indian language text. If
you do not have access to a HTML editor, you can enter the text in the same way
in say WordPad and save the document as an RTF file. Use the RTF to HTML
conversion utility RTF2HTM.EXE provided with ISM to convert to HTML format.
Preferably Monolingual Fonts should be used.
Q. Can I put the fonts
for download on my web page?
Ans.: For the
browser to be able to display Indian scripts correctly, the TrueType fonts have
to be installed on the local computer. This means that the fonts must be made
available for downloading. The TrueType fonts provided with the ISM package can
be made available by you for downloading so that your WEB document can be
viewed. If you are planning to use fonts provided with this package on the
Internet you should do the following:
Inform CDAC of your URL by email at info.gist@cdacindia.com
Alternately you
can use the 'Dynamic Fonts' concept. This can be a very effective for the users
who access your Indian Language Web Site. More details are given in this CD or
you can go to http://www.cdacindia.com/dynfonts
Q. Can I use Bilingual
fonts with ISM?
Ans.: Most ISM
utilities now have Bi-lingual font implementation. This means that the same
font contains both English and Indian language capability. It is not necessary
to select a different font for English and Indian scripts. The Script toggle
key will automatically switch between English and Indian Language. This
facility is particularly useful in applications such as Spread Sheet and
Database programs that allow only one font to be selected at a time and where
bi-lingual data is to be displayed. Two TrueType Bi-lingual typefaces have been
included.
Note: To be
able to use bilingual fonts with ISM you need to select the option of bilingual
fonts in the ISM selection box. Once bilingual font option is selected, you can
use only bilingual fonts not the monolingual fonts.
Q. ISM Installer says 'ATM required' and terminates?
Ans.: ISM
requires ATM (Adobe Type Manager) to be installed and active for use with
Microsoft Windows. Install ATM and then retry. If ATM is installed but not
active (turned Off) in the current Windows setup, run Windows, Turn ATM `On'
and then try installing ISM again. Note: ATM requires Standard or Enhanced mode
of Windows.
Q. While typing, undesired characters appear on the screen?
Ans.:
1. Check
whether ISM is active. If ISM is active check whether <CAPS LOCK> is On
and the correct font and script have been chosen. If ISM is not active either
quit windows and restart it or run ISM through the program manager using run
command in the File menu.
2. Check
whether ATM is On. If ATM is Off run the ATM Control Panel, which is in the
main group of Windows, switch ATM On and restart Windows.
3. Is this problem
specific to an application? Despite ISM supports most of the popular packages
running under Windows, some applications require special information in order
to run smoothly. Contact CDAC and check whether that application is supported.
If it is not supported send details about the kind of problems faced and the
application you are using so that it can be taken care in the ensuing versions
of ISM.
Q. Indian script fonts do not appear on the screen?
Ans.:
1. Are you
running a Windows application that supports multiple fonts usage? If not ISFOC
fonts will not appear in such applications (e.g. Notepad). Also, applications
which can show only one font at a time in a specific window such as FoxPro will
show junk when a font other then the script of the text is selected.
2. ISFOC fonts
will not appear in non-Windows applications.
3. Is ATM
installed and active? If ATM is not active, run the ATM Control Panel, which is
in the main group of Windows, switch ATM On and restart Windows.
4. Is Windows running
in Standard or 386 Enhanced mode? To check this click the About item in help
menu of the Windows Program Manager. If it is not running in either of these
modes ATM and ISM will not work.
5. If you are
running WINDOWS 3.1 run control panel and double click on the fonts icon. Click
the TrueType button and confirm that 'Show only TrueType fonts' is switched
Off. This will enable the ATM fonts in all the applications.
6. Did you
update, reinstall or modify any of your Windows files? If there was no problem
before your modification then the problem is due to some changes you have made,
so it is better to reinstall ISM.
Q. Printer does not print Indian Language Characters?
Ans.:
1. Check
whether the ISM dongle and the printer cables are connected properly.
2. Check the
printer driver installed. Install the correct driver if necessary.
3. Check if the
printer is configured to the right port and connected properly.
4. In case the
problems persist print a normal English text. To check this remove the ISM dongle
and print a normal English text from your application. If it doesn't print, the
problem is with the machine configuration. If it prints, install ISM again and
try again.
Q. The application you are running reports an error and quit?
Ans.:
1. Check if there
are too many applications running at the same time. If so, close the unwanted
applications and try again or reboot your system.
2. Check your memory. It is
recommended that you have a minimum of 4Mb RAM.
3. Check for virus. A system
infected with virus can create such problems.
Q. ISFOC fonts appear on screen and print on a non-PostScript printer but not printing on a PostScript printer?
Ans.: Probably
you would have installed the PostScript driver after installing ISM. In this
case some entries in the WIN.INI normally created by ATM or ISM Installer may
not be there. For this just copy the \PSFONTS\PFM\*.pfm into the \PSFONTS
directory and from the ATM control Panel (Main Window) 'Add' all the fonts in
the \PSFONTS directory. This will update the required files and will work fine.
* Never modify
or delete any of the initialization files like WIN.INI, ATM.INI unless you are
sure about what you are doing.
* Don't delete
or modify files in the ISM directory unless it is required and explained in the
ISM manual how to do it.

Ans.: Before
using ISM in Word we should switch off the Autocorrect options, which are there
in the Tools Menu Bar of the Word. This info is there in the ISM manual also.

MS-WORD. Go to Tools menu. Click on Autocorrect. Now you can see some
sub-options like correct two initial capitals, capitalize first letter of
sentence, capitalize names of days, replace text as you type etc. Switch off
all these options before using ISM fonts in MS-Word. Because these options
basically are for English language. They will create problems for typing in
Indian languages in Word hence should be switched off. Also in the same menu
from 'Autoformat as you type' option, please switch off 'Straight Quotes with
Smart Quotes' and 'Symbol Characters (---) with symbol (--).
2) Also while
using Script Key if the document goes to 'Print Preview' mode then do the
