ISM V5

Introduction

ISM is an Indian language interface designed to work with Windows based applications in Indian Languages. Some supported applications are MS Office, Open Office.org, Star Office, Lotus Smart Suite, PageMaker, Corel Draw, Photoshop etc. Some areas where ISM comes handy are: Word Processing, Publishing / Printing, Web Publishing, E-Commerce applications, Data Processing, Custom designed applications.

The latest version of ISM software is named as ISM V5. The core engine of ISM has been changed to give a new look and feel to the software. Some of the new features in ISM V5 are given below.

Graphics Utilities

Installer

The installer of ISM V5 is a comprehensive installer, which installs all the Utilities, Clipart viewer, Ntrans Utility etc. The installer gives a more professional touch and gives option for Typical, Compact and Custom Installation. The directory structure is made in such a way that it doesn't conflicts with other utilities of GIST.

The installation screens are very informative and allow the users to complete the installation even without any help.

Description of Menu Settings in ISM

Language

ISM V5 supports 11 Indian languages and the required langauge can be selected from the Language Option in ISM Menu.

Font Type

ISM V5 supports 8 bit True Type fonts and Type 1 fonts. ISM V5 supports 4 font types. You can select the font type from the user interface of ISM V5 using the Font Type option. The Font Types are explained below:

ISFOC Monolingual
A monolingual font has glyphs for only one script. This allows the font to have a large number of unique glyphs for a particular script. This font type produces high quality output and should be used for DTP applications.
ISFOC Monolingual Web
This font is similar to the monolingual font. This font is additionally optimized for web applications. We recommend Desk Top Publishers, web content creators (both static and dynamic), who don’t require bilingual text, but require high quality monolingual text, to use this font type.
ISFOC Bilingual
A bilingual font is one, which has glyphs for one Indian language script along with glyphs for English. With this font you can create content that contains Indian language as well as English text without having to change the font. This font type is especially useful for dictionary works, Bilingual data entry, developing Indian language applications etc.
ISFOC Bilingual Web
This font is similar to the bilingual font. In addition, it is optimized for web applications. This font type is especially useful for developing Indian language applications and static or dynamic web pages.

NOTE: The Monolingual and Bilingual web fonts can be used in web as well as non-web application areas with equal effectiveness. We recommend the use of web fonts for all purposes, so that the content created can be used in all applications. Support for the older non-web fonts has been provided for data compatibility.

Keyboard Type

ISM V5 allows you to type with keyboards of your choice. The keyboards supported by ISM V5 are Inscript, Phonetic and numerous other popular typewriters. ISM V5 also allows you to configure your own keyboard.

Switch Key

Switch Key is used for toggling between Indian Language and English. To type in Indian language, the Switch Key must be enabled. Disable the Switch Key to type in English when using Bilingual and Bilingual Web fonts. Typing in Monolingual or Monolingual Web with the Switch Key disabled will give garbage output.

Options

Enable ISM V5
This option is enabled by default. Therefore you do not need to enable it unless you have explicitly disabled it.

Hyphenation
On-line hyphenation is available only in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. This has been tested and found working fine with PageMaker, MS-Word and MS-Write. It may work in other Windows applications also. In case, any application gives problem with hyphenation 'On', switch it Off.

Cofigurable Keyboard

ISM V5 additionally provides users with a facility to create fully customized keyboards. Configurable Keyboard is a tool that you can use to create a keyboard layout of your choice. The Configurable keyboard layout is divided into two parts. The upper part represents the Inscript keyboard layout, while the lower part displays the User Defined layout also known as the Customized layout. The user can map keys from the Inscript layout on to the User Defined layout to create a customized keyboard.

Floating Keyboard

The Floating Keyboard is a handy typing tool developed especially for users who are not comfortable with the keyboard overlay. The Floating Keyboard is also useful for keyboards that do not have a printed overlay. The Floating Keyboard facilitates typing by displaying on the screen, the layout of the selected keyboard (Inscript, Phonetic, Typewriter or Customized) for the selected language.

The Floating Keyboard resides on top of all applications running on the system.

Date & time Conversion

This utility allows users to convert numbers, date and time into words in Indian language and transfer the converted data on to documents. The data gets converted to the language that has been specified in Language on the ISM V5 user interface. The font type for data transfer is as specified by user on the ISM V5 user interface.

Various formats for Date and Time are supported.

Mini Editor

The Mini Editor in ISM V5 allows to perform standard editing functions like Cut, Copy and Paste on the editor window. It is also possible to apply a desired font and font size to the editor window from Font option in Edit menu.

Data Migration System

The Database Migration System is designed for Indian Language data in FoxPro, dBase or Access format. This utility allows you to perform various data base operation as described below.

Database in SQL, dBase, FoxPro or Access can be migrated to any other database format. For example, a database in Access can be converted to SQL and vice and versa. The conversion takes care of the table structure as well as the data stored in the tables.

For e.g. For porting dBase data into Access Format. The user does not need to manually creating the tables in Access again, followed by inserting each row in the database. Instead, the user can simply use “Change Database Format” facility provided by DMS and get his entire data ported into Access.

Font Previewer

ISM V5 is packaged with a plethora of aesthetic fonts which are categorized into Default fonts and Extra fonts. During installation of ISM, fonts get installed depending upon the installation option chosen by the user:

Typical Installation All Default fonts get installed

Compact Installation Two fonts per script get installed

Custom Installation The user can choose to install either all Default fonts or two fonts per script

To save disk space the installation program does not install the Extra fonts.

Using the Font Previewer, users can install/uninstall Extra fonts. The Font Previewer also provides facility to preview a font before installing it.

Convertors

This utility (provided in the ISM V5 Menu) can be used to convert data between various formats as follows:

The conversion is done word by word. Thus a word with multiple font types is not a valid candidate for conversion. Conversion will not take place in following cases:
